Course Hero. Accessed June 21, Taken under the wing of Professor Henry Higgins, an expert of linguistics and phonetics, she becomes the object of a wager as to whether or not it is possible to make a lower-class woman passable as a sophisticated lady. Perhaps best known today for the musical reincarnation as My Fair Lady and the subsequent film version starring Audrey Hepburn, Pygmalion is a classic work of 20th-century theater. Beyond the play's witty comedy and romantic intrigue, Pygmalion offers a critique of the rigid class system of turn-of-the-century Britain, as well as the potential for feminist critique through the development of Eliza's character and her conflicted relationships with the men attempting to control her. Henry Higgins was based on an equally irritable real-life professor.

It was only a small hitch, however. Campbell went on to captivate audiences as Eliza, eventually taking the role on tour. She even played Eliza in a London revival. The musical film adaptation also cast an older actress to play Eliza. British actress Audrey Hepburn, who starred in the musical film adaptation My Fair Lady , was 35 when she appeared as Eliza Doolittle, even though the character was supposed to be Producers then cast Jeremy Brett—an actor in his 30s—to play year-old Freddy.

The filmmakers wanted to cast an older actor so that the age difference between the two leads wouldn't be as apparent to viewers. A Game of Thrones actress has played two roles in Pygmalion. Rigg was pleased that the director stayed true to Shaw's original intent with the play and that Eliza transformed into an independent woman instead of falling in love with Higgins.

No intelligent woman today would accept that ending—not Eliza going back to being a doormat and being insulted.

In —some 37 years after her original performance—Rigg returned to another stage production of Pygmalion, this time playing Professor Higgins's mother.

The Three Stooges released an adaptation of Pygmalion. In their short film Hoi Polloi the Stooges play garbage men who are taken in by a professor in an attempt to make gentlemen out of them. The film features a great deal more slapstick comedy than Shaw's version. A phonetic job. No use, dear. You said it was. Not your part of it. Does that mean that some girl has picked you up? Not at all. What a pity! Well, you never fall in love with anyone under forty-five.

When will you discover that there are some rather nice-looking young women about? My idea of a loveable woman is something as like you as possible. I shall never get into the way of seriously liking young women: some habits lie too deep to be changed.

Do you know what you would do if you really loved me, Henry? Marry, I suppose? Stop fidgeting and take your hands out of your pockets. Now tell me about the girl. I asked her. I picked her off the kerbstone.

And invited her to my at-home! That will be safe. To talk about our health! How could you be so silly, Henry? Pickering is in it with me. I shall win my bet. She talks English almost as you talk French. What does that mean?

Oh Lord! The mother is well bred, quiet, and has the habitual anxiety of straitened means.

The daughter has acquired a gay air of being very much at home in society: the bravado of genteel poverty. Higgins] How do you do?

Your celebrated son! I have so longed to meet you, Professor Higgins. Higgins, who has turned her chair away from the writing-table]. Oh, have I been rude?

Colonel Pickering [She withdraws]. How do you do, Mrs. Do you know Mrs.

Eynsford Hill—Miss Eynsford Hill? The Colonel brings the Chippendale chair a little forward between Mrs. Hill and Mrs.

Higgins, and sits down]. Oh Henry, Henry, really! We want two or three people. The parlor-maid returns, ushering Freddy. Eynsford Hill. Higgins] Ahdedo? Very good of you to come. Where was it? Sit down. Well, here we are, anyhow! Eynsford Hill, on her left.

Very sorry. If people would only be frank and say what they really think!

What they think they ought to think is bad enough, Lord knows; but what they really think would break up the whole show. Do you suppose it would be really agreeable if I were to come out now with what I really think?

Who the dickens said it was cynical? Hill] What do you know of science? What the devil do you imagine I know of philosophy? Higgins] Here she is, mother. Eliza, who is exquisitely dressed, produces an impression of such remarkable distinction and beauty as she enters that they all rise, quite flustered.

Higgins with studied grace. LIZA [speaking with pedantic correctness of pronunciation and great beauty of tone] How do you do, Mrs. Higgins told me I might come. How do you do, Miss Doolittle? I feel sure we have met before, Miss Doolittle. If you continue browsing the site, you agree to the use of cookies on this website. See our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.
